Not sure what type of air conditioner would best suit your home? We’ve put together some handy tips and frequently asked questions to help guide you through the process.

Work out what size air conditioner you need

To work out the size or capacity look at the following factors:

  • Home size: The larger the floor area and the higher the ceiling, the larger capacity your aircon will need to be. If you have a multi-storey home then may require multiple units for different zones.
  • Number of windows: A home can lose up to 40% of its heat & cooling through Windows so you need factor for this when choosing an air conditioning system.
  • Ceiling height: If you have high ceilings your unit will need to generate more cool air to maintain temperature in each room. Higher ceilings = more cooling.

Choose the best air conditioner for your needs

There are three main types of air conditioning systems on the market:

  • Portable: portable aircon units are versatile in that they can be placed anywhere with a plug/power outlet. They’re limited in their output and generally suitable for a single room. Usually they are simple to set up yourself.
  • Wall mounted Split systems: the most common type of aircon system which consists of an internal head unit and external condensor/compressor. These are generally affordable but are limited to one room cooling.
  • Ducted systems: Integrated into your home’s ceiling and wall cavity for the entire home heating & cooling. Visually less intrusive but do cost more to purchase and install. There are other installations that might better suit specific applications such as Four-way ceiling cassettes.
